High flying businessman lands his dream job — as a Hyundai mechanic

After a lifetime travelling the world as a high-flying businessman, Byung Hyun Chun is now living his boyhood dream – as a motor mechanic.

Now 59, skilled in project management, planning, marketing and finance, he oversaw major projects for top companies but started as a motor vehicle technician at Hatfields Hyundai in Nether Poppleton, York on Monday March 16 – and he’s loving every minute.

Encouraged by his parents to get the best education and qualifications, Byung first came to Britain in 2000 to manage a Korean-UK company. Mission completed, he was ready to pack his bags and set off once again. But his wife and children liked living here and wanted to settle down.

Byung says: “Once the decision to stay here was made, I obviously needed to find employment. I needed to make my contribution to society. I found various jobs, but after a while, the opportunity arose to train as a technician at York College and with that, my childhood dream of working for Hyundai popped back into my mind.

“I always enjoyed making and mending things. But of course my parents, quite rightly, encouraged me to aim high academically, to head for university and a good job.

“Now fate has taken a hand – and I’m finally that young boy again who liked takings broken things apart and getting them to work again. I’m so grateful to Hatfields – particularly to Graham Morris – because I must have driven him crazy over the last two years with my constant enquiries about vacancies! And I owe so much to my tutors at York College for putting me and Hatfields in touch in the first place.”

Hatfields Hyundai York service manager Graham Morris says Byung definitely didn’t fit their usual recruitment profile.

He says: “When I first met Byung at York College, we got on really well. We’re very similar in our enthusiasm for making things work, for fixing things and delighting in positive results.

“And yes, he did keep very closely in touch! So when a vacancy arose, I let him know. However, he knew he wasn’t going to get any special treatment and he had to apply alongside everyone else. He impressed me – I just knew that he was the right man for the job. But I did get some second opinions, which confirmed my initial gut feeling.”

Hatfields Managing Director Gareth Williams explains:‘We had a lot of applicants for this vacancy, all of whom would have been capable of doing an excellent job. However, Byung’s application shone, not simply because of his skill and experience, but also due to his character and desire to realise his life’s ambition. We were sure he would be a great asset to Hatfields Hyundai York, reflecting our own values of high levels of customer care, excellent service and a strong family tradition.”

Hatfields Hyundai York is part of the Hatfields Group, an independent, family-run business which operates dealerships across the North of England and the West Midlands and has established a successful dealer network over a number of decades.
