‘Bah Humbug!’ One in Five Brits Admit Talking to Their Car to Beat Christmas Stress

Survey shows emotional bonds with vehicles grow stronger as Christmas stress peaks

Fed up with festive traffic, last-minute shopping and endless family logistics? You’re not alone – and it turns out many Brits are turning to an unlikely confidant: their car.

New research from Warrantywise reveals that one in five UK drivers (22%) talk to their car as a way of coping with Christmas chaos. Whether it’s muttering through to-do lists, offering words of encouragement, or venting frustrations, drivers say their vehicle becomes a trusted companion during the busiest time of year.

What the Survey Found

  • A poll of 2,000 UK drivers by OnePoll found 54% regularly say words of gratitude or encouragement to their car.
  • Common phrases include “please don’t break down now” and “thank you for getting me through that.”
  • Drivers admit they chat most when stuck in traffic, driving alone, or juggling long lists of festive errands.

Why We Talk to Our Cars

For many, the car is more than just transport – it’s a private space to decompress and escape the seasonal hustle. From navigating packed supermarket car parks to sitting in traffic with the heating on full blast, the car offers a safe, judgment-free zone to offload stress.

Antony Diggins, Managing Director at Warrantywise, explains:
“You’ve spent weeks planning the perfect Christmas – then your car throws a spanner in the works with that dreaded engine warning light. It’s not just the repair bill that hurts – it’s watching weeks of planning fall apart because you can’t get anywhere.”
