Defender Rally Dominates First Half of Dakar 2026
Defender Rally has stormed through the first half of the 2026 Dakar Rally, marking an incredible debut in the world’s toughest rally-raid. Competing in the Stock class for production-based vehicles, the team has not only held its own – it has won every single stage so far.
A Historic Start
Six stages down, and the results speak for themselves:
- Rokas Baciuška and Oriol Vidal lead the Stock class overall rankings with a combined time of 29 hours, 12 minutes, and 58 seconds.
- Stéphane Peterhansel and Mika Metge sit in second place, bringing their legendary Dakar experience to the team.
- Sara Price and Sean Berriman are in fourth, fresh off a stage win in the dunes.
The sixth stage was the longest yet – a punishing 920km across Saudi Arabia’s vast desert, combining timed sections and liaison routes. Sara Price and Sean Berriman conquered the dunes to take the win with a time of 04:32:10, proving the Defender Dakar D7X‑R’s capability in the harshest conditions.
The Machine Behind the Magic
The Defender Dakar D7X‑R is no ordinary rally car. Built on the foundation of the production Defender OCTA, it retains the robust D7x body architecture, transmission, driveline, and powerful 4.4‑litre twin‑turbo V8 engine. For Dakar, this already formidable platform has been enhanced with:
- Wider track and increased ride height for ultimate stability and clearance
- Upgraded suspension to tackle extreme terrain
- Enhanced cooling systems to withstand the punishing desert heat
This fusion of production DNA and rally engineering makes the D7X‑R a true embodiment of Defender’s ethos: capability without compromise. Competing in the Dakar Rally—a two-week, 5,000km odyssey across some of the harshest landscapes on Earth—the team is supported by world-class partners including Castrol, YETI, Bilstein, Bell & Ross, and Epic Games, who have even brought the Defender Dakar D7X‑R to life in Fortnite and Rocket League, giving fans worldwide the chance to experience the thrill virtually.
Eyes on the Finish Line
With seven stages still to go, the Defender Rally team knows the toughest challenges lie ahead, but as Jack Lambert, Head of Technical Integration, explains: “Leading at the halfway point is an incredible achievement, but we know there’s a long way to go. The team is motivated and working round the clock to keep our cars performing at their best.” The Defender Dakar D7X‑R shares its DNA with the production Defender OCTA – a vehicle you can experience for yourself. At Hatfields Land Rover, we’re proud to represent a brand that proves its capability on the world stage.
